My Life after ECT

My Personal Story.

I had ECT when I was 16, 17 and 18 years old it continued well into my adult life. It was awful I remember one time I didn’t want it. However it took five nurses to hold me down while the doctor gave me the injection to put me to sleep, so they could administer the treatment.

I was receiving ECT before they started giving muscle relaxants, every nerve, muscle and bone in my body ached after the treatment. Moving around after the treatment was extremely painful.

ECT blocks out memories, because I had so much of it (over 150+ treatments) my memory is very bad now. I can’t remember what I did five minutes ago. ECT is supposed to get rid of bad memories in my case I can remember all the bad things, but I can’t remember life as a child, or my children growing up.

ECT is has left me very forgetful, and unable to learn or cope with modern life. My treatment was all carried out in the Durham area. Usually at the Winterton Hospital in Sedgefield, through the years I discover that the government had a compensation scheme for people like me, who had been given far too much treatment, unfortunately my doctors at the time where unable to find my medical records.  The hospital had been reclassified, and some fire had destroyed the paper record system that was in place
